Vinyl is still having its day, but as someone who was a kid in the 80s and 90s, I’m glad to see CDs making a comeback.
Personally, they never went away in my collection. I still own some CDs I was listening to in 1997, when I was a junior in high school driving around in my 1989 Dodge Spirit with my windows rolled down and my speakers blasting at full volume, so much so they were peaking.
Of course, the full volume driving around hasn’t changed, but over the years my vehicles and sound systems have gotten much better. What went away, though, was the CD player. Very few cars still come from the factory with a CD player in them.
That’s where a good portable CD player comes in. My recommendation is to look for a good old school Sony Discman. You can find them pretty cheap, and they still sound great.
With all this said, CheapAudioMan just released a new CD player recommendation video that I think everyone who is trying to get into CDs, or back into CDs, should check out. He gives you a full breakdown of CD players at every level.
One of the players he recommends is one I know our coauthor in the community, @james-setser, will be writing a full review of in the coming months. I’ll just leave that as a teaser of things to come.
